Broker's Comments
This pretty little boat is a Freda Class gaffed rigged sailing yacht and will never fail to turn heads. Freda Class yachts are replicas of Sir William Priestly, built in 1934 as to the Morcombe Bay fishing fleet. The lifeboat followed the style of the traditional shrimp fishing vessels that were common along the north west coast of England such as the Lancashire Nobby.
This boats hull has been moulded from Sir William Priestly as built in 1934.
From the owner:
She is eligible for classic boat events and has been a regular attendee at OGA (Old Gaffers Association) rallies.
As a gaff cutter she will never be a greyhound upwind, but off wind she flies. She has been known to overhaul 30+ft modern bermudan rigged yachts. Her head sails are carried on Whickham-Martin furling gear for convenience.
Her long straight keel and firm turn of bilge mean that she takes to the ground easily, the keel sinking in to all but the firmest of mud and the hull remaining upright.
With a draft of just 3’ (1metre) she can access destinations which might be challenging for deeper draft yachts. The 2½tons of lead ballast is moulded into the hull and is therefore secure even if she grounds.
We have also installed a charcoal heater for winter cruising, and an
alcohol cooker to avoid the risk, and cost, of bottled gas (see Practical Boat Owner. April
2022). The pipework for gas is still in place should a new owner wish to revert to this.
As much as she is beautiful she is in need of attention on her woodwork, decks and interior. But don't forget she does have a new Beta engine (2020)!
