Tony Blews's UK Waterways Ranking Site is a great way to discover popular waterways websites, and as a blogger I particularly enjoy checking out the blog rankings and wandering about discovering new boating blogs.

There is a full chart listing of over 150 websites, and any relevant website can register to be included. Rankings are then subdivided so that visitors can see a list of popular blogs, forums and other sites. Tony explains;

“The system tracks each time the image button is displayed on your page, then orders the list of sites based on the number of hits over the last seven days.”

The site is free, and supported by advertising banners. You can also support Tony’s work by buying him a gift from his Amazon wish list.

There’s been a bit of “argy bargy” lately, with website owners complaining about how Tony measures hits and calculates the popularity of sites. Tony has created, developed, maintained the site and paid the associated costs. However, he has even received criticism that he shouldn’t be running the site if he doesn’t have the time to run it. So he put it to the vote: Should we keep running the UKWR site? 96% of voters said yes!

For me personally I have found that because it makes it so easy to discover other waterways websites it has made it easier to feel part of an online waterways community. At the time of writing Boatshed Grand Union is ranked 21 in the chart: proud to be nestled between the ExOwnerships Forum and Baddie the Pirate (who sells LED lighting for boats, and probably has the best website name in the whole listing!)

I’m of the opinion that it’s Tony’s site and he can run it how he likes.
