The designs very name, ‘Cartwright’, inspires feelings of dependable security, and what we have here is a solid and practical yacht designed to take you safely where ever you might want to go, within reason. Clues abound, such as the permanently fitted mast steps and the large A-frame behind the cockpit on which the solar panels are mounted. This yacht has pleasing and practical lines. The deck is wide and uncluttered, with a flush coach-roof. All the massive fittings are bolted solidly into place. The constructional ethos appears to have been based on the principle that heavy is good, whether it’s the hull itself, the solid timber washboards or the leaves on the folding saloon table whose unexpected mass took me quite aback when I came to set them up. Outside, the cockpit is deep and the winches are generously sized. A beautifully curved tiller steers a big rudder hung on an inclined stock in the traditional style. Down below the emphasis is on simple practicality. Step in over a high bridge-deck and down onto the large platform formed by the engine casing. Big hatches provide excellent access to the engine and stern gear. There is a wide pilot berth in the starboard quarter, the head of which doubles as a seat for the navigator. The chart table is large and incorporates a useful deep stowage area. To port the galley is large with plentiful lockers. Storage features prominently in the saloon, with numerous deep, curtained, cave lockers above the settee berths on either side. There are no gas hazard issues on this boat as there is no gas (though it could be added): cooking is via one of the popular Origo double burner spirit stoves, and the gas-free theme extends to the cabin heating. Here a beautiful sparkling Taylor diesel heater takes pride of place on the main bulkhead, where it is complemented by a gimballed oil lamp. The saloon looks like a cosy place in which to be tucked up on a cold winter’s night. This is a well-built and pacy-looking long-distance cruiser. To get the best out of her she needs a little updating perhaps, but hey, don’t we all?
