Broker's Comments

The Dockrell 27 is an intriguing small cruiser. She owes much of her design heritage to the Hurley 27, with a very similar deck and cabin arrangement. However, the Hurley underwater section design was modified to reduce draught. Righting moment was maintained by a incorporating a wide, flat-based keel plate for much of the length of the long keel – a sort of extended wing keel. It is said that it would be safe to dry out upright on it, though not too many people are thought to have been brave enough to try it. This example is currently sloop-rigged, with in-mast mainsail reefing. The furling staysail, mounted on its self-tacking Hoyt-type boom is available for re-fit. She needs a genoa as the last one blew out in a strong wind. In general, she seems to be in pretty good condition. The instrumentation could use some updating, but the engine is the larger option offered: a freshwater-cooled Yanmar 2GM20 diesel. Deck fittings are solid. All in all, she is an inspiring vessel with a good reputation and a lot of character.
